Pressed sheet cane weave looks the same as hand lace cane, but it is actually machine woven and installed as a sheet.  The sheet of press cane is measured for each wood frame. It is hand formed and glued into a groove in the wood frame with the use of a wooden spline. Pressed sheet cane became available in the early 1900’s as a less costly way to produce the look of traditional hand lace cane. Press sheet cane is difficult to remove as the spline that holds the cane in place is glued into the channel on the wood frame. 

Like traditional hand lace caned pieces, pressed sheet cane typically last 20 to 30 years with normal use. 

Cost is determined by the inch of material used. It usually ranges from $65 to $145 per seat and double that if the chair back is also caned.  The current price is $0.75 per square inch installed. There is an additional repair charge if the chair needs disassembly and reassembly for the pressed cane installation.
